Discovering Your Purpose

goal setting

As a life coach, you can imagine that when people come to me, they want to talk about how to live their purpose. Often they feel they are struggling or have some untapped potential inside of them.

This is where, as a coach, I can be there to support, give accountability, and offer tools to get refocused and get your purpose back.

Maybe you’re at a stage in your life where you are going through a transition. Perhaps your kids are leaving the house, and you find yourself with more time on your hands. Or maybe you feel like you’ve lost your sense of purpose outside of motherhood with young children.

If you feel you’ve lost your purpose, I want you to know that you’re not alone. I also want you to know that your purpose is not outside of you. It’s not a treasure to be found. It’s already a treasure within.

The definition of purpose is the reason something exists.

So, for example, a refrigerator exists because someone had the idea that we needed to keep our food cold so it would last longer and not spoil. That’s what its purpose is.

So take a moment to contemplate, what is your purpose? You weren’t here, and now you are. God had the idea that He wanted you for His purpose, so you exist. So now that is your purpose. You exist just to live this human life.

Your brain will tell you that it doesn’t know why you’re here and that you better figure it out, or your life will be wasted. It also tells you that it better be something big like helping the planet or the less fortunate.

We look at people we admire, and instead of using them for inspiration, we use them against ourselves to “prove” that we are failing at life.

But, when you stop looking outside of yourself and go within, you can ask and answer the question for yourself.

You don’t have to do anything to fulfill your purpose in life. God created you. You exist. So that purpose has already been fulfilled. You are already purposeful! For however many years you’ve been alive on this early, you have been living out your purpose. Being alive is enough. You don’t have to do better.

But once you understand that, now what? What do you do now?

Now instead of stressing about finding your purpose, you get to decide what you will do with your time. What will make your experience while on earth more fun and meaningful to you?

You just get to decide right now what you want to do. Is there something out there you want to go and grab? Choose to do that. What stage of life are you in? Choose to be present and purposeful in that.

And whatever you choose doesn’t have to be something that stays your purpose forever and ever. It’s just where you are right now. What do you want it to be today?

When you start living in that, you will create, you will contribute, and you will evolve.

So no matter your job or life circumstances, you get to be the person who fulfills your purpose. You get to be that person all the time. And then, by being that person, you’ll know what to do next because the doing comes from the being.

In this earthly life, we can’t escape the hard parts of it, and our purpose isn’t going to be rainbows and daisies all the time, but it’s worth it to bring yourself back to the purpose you have chosen for yourself because that is when you are the most true to yourself.
